Blog at WordPress.com. | Theme: Ocean Mist by Ed Merritt.
I’ve read some of your blog with great interest, Aaron. I’m a 60ish mother visiting my son here, and finding it fascinating in a horrific sort of way. Actually I find it like a cross between India in the 1970s and Hong Kong in the 1980s, with some Bel Air thrown in. I was actually directed to the blog you wrote about garden centres when I was trying to find out what plants I could usefully put in their ‘garden’ here that would be able to withstand summer heat and periodic neglect. Any ideas?

Hi Clary – thank you for your kind comments about my blog and I actually your description about Dubai is fairly accurate.
I will have a chat with some of my friends who have greener fingers than myself and let you know what would be suitable for the garden.

Hi Aaron,
Great to read your blogs, they have helped us no end in our attempt to relocate to Dubai, although British red tape concerning the education certificates is mind blowing and very slow, dont they know we want to get out of this cold country!!. Can you offer any assistance with where would need to ship some small personal belongings to, as we cant bring them with us on the initial flight out which should be at the end of Jan. Any other info which you would consider helpful would also be great. Sounds like you love life out there, and we cant wait to join you. maybe we can meet up and you can show us where the best bits are. Thanks Sue

Dear Sue,
Thank you for your kind comments about my blog. I originally started writing it to record what I had to go through to move and it is kind of evolved into a “scrapbook” of my life in Dubai.
I will send you a couple of thoughts by email.
All the best on your relocation and hopefully it will have stopped raining by the time you arrive.
Cheers

Hey there,
This might seem like the most random post ever, but I’ll be traveling to Dubai in a few weeks, and I wanted to know your thoughts about local places I should visit in Dubai, aside from all the tourist-y spots. I’ve been doing some research for the past couple weeks, including reading your blog. Wow, hope that doesn’t sound too stalkerish. I’m just trying to gather “insider info” on Dubai. You’re probably quite busy and you can totally just delete this comment, but if you helped a girl out, she would very much appreciate it
As to what I want to know? Bars, restaurants, hookah (shisha?) lounges, nightclubs, hidden gems, etc. Anything and everything. It’s completely open – whatever you think is worth checking out in Dubai. I’ll be in Dubai the second week of April and staying off Sheikh Zayed Road, near Mall of the Emirates, if that helps. And if you ever need insider info on New York City, I’m your girl.
Thanks a bunch!
A grateful American

Hi Aaron
Was browsing trying desperately to find some interesting material on life in Dubai and came across yours!!!
Love it, makes great reading and gives me a real insight into the country and its sister UAE companinons.
Read your recommendations on restaurants with interest and the China Tea ‘experience’……..
What about a fresh fruit smoothie drink, can you buy them in cafes etc???? Do you have any smoothie bars????? I have an interesting idea and it would be most helpful if you would take two minutes to advice and give me your overview on this subject…….
Best wishes,
Take Care, Happy Travelling,

South Ridge is a nice development and in fact very similar to the one of I live in.
I have asked a few friends to suggest something that you can do with a 14year at New Year – we did not come up with much apart from the usual family friendly restaurants such TGI Fridays and the like. I will post back if we can come up with something better.

Hi Aaron,
Great Blog. I`ve really enjoyed reading up on Dubai. 10 of us are travelling to the sevens at the end of November, and I seem to be in charge of ensuring that we make the most of our time. The Al Fattan Towers have been recommended to us, but I can`t make out if they`re well placed for the necessary entertainment required by a gang of rugby boys from wales. If you know them, I`d be glad to hear your opinion, or if you think there`s somewhere else we should consider.
Thanks

Hi John,
I am glad you enjoyed the blog! 10 lads in in Dubai for the sevens eh? You will have a cracking time!
As for accommodation – I think you will be very happy in the Al Fattan Towers (Mai Thai and Wagamamas on your doorstep) . There are a number of hotels within walking distance with bars and restaurants. More importantly “Barasti” is only a short cab ride away and I am sure the guys will enjoy the excellent beach bar.
Just a tip for the sevens. Arrive early on the Saturday – the traffic is horrendous.
Cheers

Hey Aaron,
You have a serious following on this blog due to the high search rankings you get from the articles. Neat stuff really. I found an article of yours about Custom Tailoring because that is my business here. I run an arm of the U.S’s leading custom tailoring company out of my apt, which enables me to offer clients stuff that matches or exceeds saville row quality for a 3rd of the price. I saw you spent 1000 BUCKS in bur dubai, I could have got you a 5k dollar suit for 1000 bucks. If you could write an article on me I would be super appreciative, and if you are in the marketing again for a suit I could definitely repay the favor!!
let me know man.

Congrats on the Ahlan Top 100!
I run an indie record label in Dubai which is very much focused on giving Dubai the reputation of a credible music nation. Our goal is to export a “product” to the world which can compete with the best international acts. We are currently promoting our first release and I would appreciate any help we can get when it comes to PR. I’d like to give you a copy of the CD for you to listen to and blog about. How do I get it to you? Check out Jonas’ music here http://www.myspace.com/jonasdesaimusic. If you like it, help us promote it with your blog and let’s make Dubai better together!

Aaron, Happy 3rd anniversary in Dubai. As a fellow IT professional and web geek in Australia, your writing strikes a chord with me.
Amongst all the hype with the recession and reports of people leaving dubai giving a negative spin to things, your view that this is a good time to move to Dubai is refreshing.
As it happens I am looking at an offer I’ve received from Dubai just today.
I have until tomorrow to get back to them and would love to have a chat and get your opinion.
Could you drop me a note with your email?

By: Olivia on July 21, 2009

Hi Olivia,
Ramadan is a quiet time in Dubai. Most business’s have reduced opening times. Restautants are open in the day, though they will be covered via curtains or blinds. Obviously one can not drink or eat in public during the day.
At night there is the Iftar celebrations which are usually busy and the malls are usually packed late at night.
Nightclubs and pubs are much quieter – with alcohol only served after 7pm and no live music.
Overall it is very relaxed.

Hi Frankie,
I would recommend staying at either the Novotel or IBIS located at the World Trade Center. The metro is <10min walk from either hotel and you are centrally positioned to see both old and new Dubai. It will also be relatively cool at that time of year (December) so the walk will be pleasant.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for dropping by!
A couple of key things for me:
1. Ensure that suitable housing or allowance is provided. Try and get sometime to look at some properties in the areas that you want to live in.
2. If you have kids ensure that the education allowance is enough as this seems to be continue to go up
3. The package gives you ample provision to save.
The good thing is I find the UAE a cheaper place to live than Australia.
Good luck and I will drop you an email if you want some more specific details.
Cheers

Hi Aaron,
today I asked myself “To Buy or not DU-BAI” and i started to use my favorite tool “Google” to get some information. I have been there before (only on vacation) but I really wanted to see how it is to work there and whats the best way to find a job there. So I found your blog and I LOVE it. I am not done reading but its added to my favorites so I will come back again and I hope you will continue bringing all the good stuff here

Hi Aaron,
It has been a long time. Do you ever drop by in Mauritius? I have been down here for about 2 years and it is heaven on earth indeed.
Best regards,
