Cannes I Kick It?

I am spending most of this week in Cannes at VMworld Europe 2009. From a work perspective it is one of the highlights of the year. Yesterday, I worked and presented at partner day which was a lot of fun. It was busy with around 1500 people showing up for the key note and sessions throughout the day.

The show “proper” starts today with an expected 4500 people due to attend over the course of the three days. I went last year and was quite lost amongst the mass of exhibitors, vast number of break out sessions and crowds of people. This year I am much happier to be here – I know lots more VMware employees, partners and customers and it is great to see them all in once place. Also it is great to see a good sized contingent coming from the Middle East.

Also – four nights in Cannes is not a bad place to spend some time. I visited a wonderful steak restaurant called Le Pastis – I can highly recommend the roast beef and mash potato there, it is comfort food out of the top drawer. It is also pleasantly warm during the day here while a little brisk at night it makes a nice change from the dusty/foggy Dubai winter.

As soon as the conference is over I am popping over to the UK to see a good friend of mine get married. Then once March arrives I will be back in Dubai which will have made February one of my busiest travel months ever (six countries and two weddings in four weeks).  It will be good to spend a few days not living out of a suitcase.

Edit – thought I would add a few photos that really summed up the four days in Cannes and VMworld.

The Marina was looking as good as ever

The crowds on the first morning heading to the key note:

While even more queued to complete the registration:

After the Key note – the mass charge to breakouts was a little scary:

The party on the Wednesday was a highlight and there was a nice welcome awaiting once you got it:

However it was hard not to enjoy the excellent session band covering old school rock songs that got everybody jumping:

And a special mention to the two guys in the middle east team at VMware who are the engine room and make it all happen. The technology consultants Deepak and Walid:
